“Better Late Than Never” Quartet at the Show Low Days Car Show 2010

June 8th, 2010

One of the High Country Chorus quartets – Better Late Than Never – performed at the Show Low, Arizona, “Show Low Days” event on June 5, 2010.

The quartet members are:  Everett Peterson, Tenor; Steve Voller, Lead; Joe Stone, Bass, and Denny Shankland, Baritone (L to R in the first slide show photo).

As you will see in the slide show, the BLTN quartet sang in the picnic area, in a hot tub, at various food booths, in front of the Over The Hill Gang car club, and in a great looking 1941 Packard convertible. The Show Low City Channel 4 photographer actually took a video of the performance in the convertible.

The also sang to Conrad and Michelle Monroe’s 1939 Ford, and the lady who owned a 1905 Sears Motor Buggy.  Finally, the event MC turned off the sound system music so the crowd around the Sears car could hear the quartet. Utimately, as you will see in the final photos of the slide show, the quartet ended up with the sound system mike, and sang to the entire audience. It was great fun, and they were able to mention our upcoming annual show several times. Congratulations to “Better Late Than Never!”

May, 2010, Chorus Party

May 19th, 2010

The High Country Barbershop Chorus cleans the trash from Woolford Road in Show Low twice a year. This happens in mid-May and mid-September.

Typically, the evening of the road clean-up, there is a “chorus party” at a chorus member’s home. Usually, but not always, this is at the home of our chorus director and his wife. The slide show below covers the party held at “the Doc’s” on Saturday evening, May 15, 2010.

We can thank Denny Shankland for the photos of this event. Denny took several photos, and also “loaned” the camera to Alexander “Zander” Pansulla – who took several photos as well.

After Show “Glimmer” Party, 2008

February 10th, 2010

Original Post: Hard to believe, but there seem to be no photos of the 2008 Glimmer party available to the web master at this time. We know they are out there, and will continue to search.

Update: Thanks to our 2010 Chapter President Denny Shankland, we now have photos of the 2008 Glimmer party, slideshow below.

After each annual Barbershop Harmony Show, there are two additional events. The first is the “Afterglow” the evening of the show, held for the chorus and family, guest participants in the show, and friends of the chorus. The second takes place the morning after the show, called the “Glimmer.” This is an informal “breakfast” for the chorus, families and guests. Guest quartets or visiting choruses are invited and usually attend if their travel arrangements allow it. The slideshow below contains photos of the 2008 “Glimmer” party. The party was held at the home of the chorus director, Doc and his wife Jackie. Guest performers on our show in 2008 included the Nexus Quartet, and the quartet also attended this Glimmer as the photos show. Details for “Nexus” will be found below the slideshow.

The dictionary definition of “nexus” is an accurate depiction of this quartet’s connected blend of voices and personalities. Barbershop Harmony Society Rocky Mountain District Champions in 2004, and International competitors every year since (2005 – 2008), NeXus is delighted to be out and about performing throughout the country as one of the Top 20 quartets in the world.

Comprised of long-life musicians, the four a cappella and barbershop enthusiasts continue to advance the art forms and capture the hearts of their audiences.

Ryan Wilson, the quartet’s lead, is a multi-talented musician and accomplished performer with four district quartet championships to his name.

The bass of the quarter, Mark Zenk, is an active barbershop competitor and busy performer, traveling nationally with multiple a cappella groups.

Mike Davidson, the group’s baritone, has been active in a cappella and barbershop groups since the ripe old age of 8 and brings an extensive performance background to the group.

And saving the best for last, the final member is tenor, George Davidson. In addition to being Mike’s dad, George was the baritone of Classic Collection, 1982 International Champions, and he has been actively performing world-wide for over 25 years.

When you put them all together, NeXus truly makes a remarkable sound and lights up the stage with their fun personalities. It’s obvious they love what they do, and their audiences love it too!

The High Country Chorus thanks NeXus for being on our show, and for being such a delight to our audience.
