Community Service

From the Chorus President, Duane Krause

Community Support and Charitable Activity Spring 2019

This year the High Country Barbershop Chorus is under the direction of Theresa Dick, PhD. The chorus members are very pleased and positive to have her teaching and directing our efforts.  She is well known in the White Mountains communities for her work as Violinist, past Maestro of the White Mountains Symphony Orchestra, music instructor at Blue Ridge High School. Last summer the chorus funded her attendance at Harmony University in Nashville and Dr. Theresa brought back a plethora of great ideas bundled in great enthusiasm.

Our chorus has donated over $12,500 for the High school, and Junior High choirs of Pinetop, Show Low and Snowflake in the last several years. For the past seven years the chorus has put on a Christmas show with student choirs and music groups from area schools with proceeds going to the music departments of the schools that participate in the show. The 2018 Christmas concert brought in admission donations of $2,000. The Chorus Board of Directors chose to add $400 and distribute $2,400 among the three choirs that participated and made a donation to the Dance Academy.

For the past few years The High Country Barbershop Chorus lent its voice in support of fund raisers for area charities and schools. Quartets from the chapter have been performing at events for service clubs and charitable organizations. The Singing Valentines fund raiser for the chorus is popular each February. The chorus does a road cleanup on Woolford Road twice a year. In fact we were the very first organization to be licensed by the city of Show Low for such work. We have performed at the annual August fund raisers for Meals on Wheels, and Blue Ridge High School’s Annual Talent Show. We sing at senior centers, nursing homes and senior apartments. We performed at the tree lighting ceremony in Snowflake last December to a large, happy but chilled crowd of appreciative residents. A fun time was had by all, especially our intrepid members.

Our ladies auxiliary “The Better Half Notes” support the chorus and create activities that promote friendship, social activities and retention of membership.  They continue to create a welcoming environment for the members with Ice Cream Socials and other get-togethers.

In 2018 our chorus board of directors focused on growth and on finding a new director among other goals. We do have a great new director and the chorus not only grew in numbers but the number of our members who also joined the Harmony Society nearly doubled. The High Country Barbershop Chorus is a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, also known as the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. and is a registered, non-profit corporation (IRS Section 501(C)3).
